Leander Independent School District (LISD) has announced a 2-hour delay for Wednesday, January 28, in response to lingering freezing temperatures and the potential for icy conditions. This decision comes after extensive collaboration with local emergency management, transportation staff, and officials to ensure student and staff safety.

The delayed start aims to allow the sun to soften icy areas and enhance visibility while also providing extra time for campus leaders and maintenance crews to prepare for a safe school environment. Weather forecasts suggest improving conditions as the morning progresses, yet families and staff are encouraged to remain cautious during their commute, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and sidewalks, where slick spots may persist. Any delays affecting bus routes will be communicated directly through the SMART Tag system.

LISD’s Facilities and Operations teams have been working diligently over the past few days to assess and clear school campuses. While inside the buildings remains safe and well-maintained, some challenges persist due to ice buildup on sidewalks and ramps. The safety of students and staff is the district’s top priority, and families are urged to determine the suitability of travel in their areas, with tardies excused for students who have parental notes. Staff members are also encouraged to communicate with their campus or department leaders regarding their situations.

The revised schedule for the day is as follows:

– Elementary schools will open at 9:30 a.m. (doors open at 9:10 a.m.)
– High schools will start at 10:15 a.m. (doors open at 9:45 a.m.)
– Middle schools will begin at 11:05 a.m. (doors open at 10:35 a.m.)
– Early College High School will follow the middle school schedule.

Other essential adjustments include:

– Buses will follow a 2-hour delay.
– All before-school activities are canceled.
– Breakfast options will consist of cereal and milk.

For early childhood and prekindergarten programs, the changes are:

– PreK 3 Morning Class is canceled.
– PreK 3 Afternoon Class will follow a normal schedule from 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
– PreK 4 will have a late start at 9:30 a.m.
– Certain other classes have been canceled, while others will follow adjusted schedules.

The district expresses gratitude to families, students, and staff for their patience and understanding during this extended winter weather event, reaffirming its commitment to safety first. The adjusted schedule aims to ensure that despite challenging weather, the learning process continues smoothly.
