Social welfare recipients are receiving vital support in their journey toward self-sufficiency through innovative income-generation projects. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, focuses on equipping individuals with the necessary tools and resources to establish small businesses.

Minister Sashi Kiran emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to reduce long-term dependency on social welfare by promoting accountability, smart business planning, and sustainability within these ventures. This forward-thinking approach is designed to empower participants and encourage economic independence.

The recent handover involved 10 beneficiaries from the Central Division, including individuals from Nausori, Korovou, Suva, Navua, and Rewa. Acting Commissioner Central Mateo Naiveli, along with staff from the Social Welfare Nausori Office, were present to witness the occasion. This support comes on the heels of the recipients completing the Ministry’s “Start Your Business” training program, which was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development.

Throughout the training, participants crafted business plans and chose projects aligned with their skills and the needs of their local markets. The supported businesses encompass a variety of ventures, including canteens, kava businesses, market vending, jewelry making, fish selling, and BBQ enterprises.

To further assist these aspiring entrepreneurs, the Ministry provided essential equipment and initial stock to jumpstart their businesses. Minister Kiran reiterated that the program has the potential to create meaningful pathways for social welfare recipients, enabling them to engage in productive economic activities and improve their financial situations.

This initiative represents a significant step toward fostering self-reliance and enhancing the livelihoods of participants, ultimately contributing to the economic vitality of their communities.
