In a crucial Week 18 matchup for the division title, the San Francisco 49ers faced the Seattle Seahawks without two key players: Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, both sidelined by injuries.

Trent Williams was injured on the first play during the previous week’s victory over the Chicago Bears. Despite being listed as questionable leading up to Saturday’s game, he could not participate. On the other hand, Pearsall deals with a knee injury, making this his eighth game missed this season, even though he had been limited in practice throughout the week.

With Williams unavailable, rookie Austen Pleasants stepped up to make his first career start. Brandon Parker was also elevated from the practice squad to serve as a backup for the game. Pearsall’s absence means more opportunities for Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson, who look to capitalize on the playing time.

Fortunately, the 49ers welcomed back Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle, who had been missing due to an ankle injury, and cornerback Upton Stout, who had been in concussion protocol. Defensive end Keion White also returned after being questionable with a groin issue.

For the Seahawks, backup left tackle Josh Jones was cleared to play after dealing with ankle and knee injuries. He took over for the injured Charles Cross. Seattle’s inactive roster included Cross, safety Coby Bryant (knee), linebacker Jared Ivey, guard Bryce Cabeldue, offensive lineman Mason Richman, and tight end Nick Kallerup. The Seahawks also elevated running back Cam Akers and cornerback Tyler Hall from their practice squad to enhance their game roster.

The absence of key players highlights the impact injuries can have in critical late-season games. However, the returns of Kittle and other key contributors for the 49ers offer a glimmer of optimism as the team strives for success in their playoff pursuits.
