The Fiji Museum is currently serving as a vibrant center for ancient storytelling with a three-day Warli Art Workshop, led by Indian folk artist and yoga educator Rashmi Chaudhary, taking place in Suva. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the High Commission of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, introduces participants to Warli painting, one of India’s oldest tribal art forms.

Originating over 2,000 years ago from Maharashtra, Warli art is celebrated for its minimalist use of geometric shapes—particularly circles, triangles, and squares—to portray the deep connection between humanity and nature. During the opening remarks, Mrs. Chaudhary stressed that the essence of Warli art lies beyond mere technical skill. “Warli art does not seek perfection; it seeks expression,” she expressed, highlighting its role as a universal language that resonates with communities around the world, including those in the Pacific.

Mrs. Chaudhary, who is certified in yoga and is actively involved with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is also known for promoting women’s wellness. This workshop embodies her holistic philosophy, merging creativity with mindfulness.

On the first day, participants were guided through the basics of Warli symbols and will move on to painting traditional scenes on modern objects like bottles and plates. The workshop not only enriches participants’ artistic skills but also signifies the growing cultural exchange between India and Fiji. By the conclusion of the event, attendees will illustrate their journey by transforming recycled items into expressive narratives reflecting village life and rituals.

“I hope participants take home more than just a painting; I hope they take home a feeling of calm and connection,” Mrs. Chaudhary remarked, underscoring the deeper impact of the art form. This workshop represents not just a creative endeavor, but a celebration of shared cultures and community bonds, fostering a sense of togetherness and artistic expression in Fiji.
