Vitale and Barkley Team Up for Historic NCAA First Four Broadcast

In an exciting development for college basketball fans, Dick Vitale and Charles Barkley are set to share the broadcast booth for an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in their illustrious careers. This historic pairing, which combines over a century of basketball experience, will take place during a First Four matchup as part of CBS Sports and TNT Sports’ extensive coverage.

Before their NCAA Tournament debut, the duo will also make their regular-season broadcasting debut on Saturday, December 13, when No. 22 Indiana faces off against No. 17 Kentucky on ESPN. This is particularly meaningful for Vitale, as he has recently overcome significant health challenges. At 86, the Hall of Fame broadcaster announced in September that he is cancer-free following treatment for multiple diagnoses, including melanoma, lymphoma, and laryngeal cancer.

Vitale’s return to broadcasting earlier this year marked a significant moment for him and fans alike. He made his comeback courtside during then-No. 2 Duke’s game against Clemson, his first assignment after a 22-month hiatus. With over 1,000 games called, Vitale has solidified his status as one of the most recognizable and cherished voices in college basketball.

Bringing a contrasting style to the table, Barkley, an award-winning analyst for TNT’s Inside the NBA for the past 25 years, complements Vitale’s vibrant storytelling with his own candid insights. Their chemistry promises an engaging and entertaining broadcast, blending passion, humor, and deep basketball knowledge.

Harold Bryant, CBS Sports’ executive producer, expressed excitement over this collaboration, stating, “Dick has meant so much to the game of basketball, and we have long felt he deserved an opportunity to call an NCAA Men’s Tournament game. Having him call the game with Charles will be must-see TV and a great way to tip off the First Four.”

This duo not only offers fans a unique opportunity to witness two basketball legends together but also assures viewers that the commentary will be as compelling as the game itself. The presence of Vitale and Barkley will undoubtedly enhance the experience, making this event one to remember for both die-hard fans and casual viewers alike.
