NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The U.S. women’s national soccer team kicked off its 11th SheBelieves Cup campaign on Sunday with an impressive 2-0 victory over Argentina, courtesy of goals from Lindsey Heaps in the 19th minute and Jaedyn Shaw in the 56th minute. This win marked the third consecutive triumph for the U.S., following earlier victories against Chile and Paraguay in January.

While the game ended on a positive note, it was marred by injuries to two key players. Defender Lilly Reale’s performance was abruptly halted in the second half due to a hard tackle, while forward Trinity Rodman fell in pain during stoppage time after contesting for the ball. Fortunately, both players were later seen walking independently along the sideline, suggesting the injuries might not be serious.

In this match, there were no new debuts, which is a departure from coach Emma Hayes’ recent practice of experimenting with the lineup. However, she made some strategic adjustments throughout the game. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey recorded her seventh shutout for the national team, making three vital saves to maintain the clean sheet. The match also saw the return of sisters Gisele and Alyssa Thompson to the national team, with Gisele starting the match and Alyssa coming on as a substitute in the 76th minute.

The U.S. team will face Canada next in Columbus, Ohio. Canada, currently ranked No. 10 in the world by FIFA, secured a decisive 4-1 win against Colombia earlier in the day, highlighting their readiness for the upcoming challenge.

Coach Hayes displayed her innovative approach by fielding a unique starting XI, including players like Dickey and center backs Tara Rudd and Kennedy Wesley, along with versatile performance from Maddie Dahlien as a wingback. This flexibility adds depth to the team’s strategy heading into the tournament.

Heaps, who also served as captain in the match, played a crucial role in opening the scoring. After Joseph won the ball, Heaps connected with an accurate shot to find the back of the net, demonstrating her relevance in the lineup. She continued to contribute significantly in the second half, assisting Shaw’s goal that enhanced the U.S. lead.

Despite the injuries to Reale and Rodman, the overall performance of the U.S. team reflected a positive trajectory as they navigate through the SheBelieves Cup. Both players are integral to the U.S. setup, especially with Reale being a standout defender for Gotham FC, and Rodman, after overcoming injuries, bringing much-needed dampening to the attack.

As the tournament progresses, questions remain regarding the availability of Reale and Rodman, with the national team allowing fifty players in the camp. Their health will be critical as the U.S. looks to build on this momentum and secure further victories in the SheBelieves Cup. The development of players like Heaps and the Thompson sisters offers fans hope as the U.S. women strive for another successful campaign.
