President Trump stated on Monday that he is not dismissing the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to Venezuela, as his administration explores military options against the nation, which the White House accuses of being led by a figure involved in drug trafficking. The U.S. military has recently intensified its presence in the Caribbean, ramping up both troop deployments and military exercises in the region.
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s most advanced aircraft carrier, is now within striking distance of Venezuela, with around 15,000 American troops currently stationed in the area, including on land and at sea near Puerto Rico. This includes the deployment of U.S. F-35 stealth fighter jets, which have been frequently seen in the skies over Puerto Rico over the past week.
In conjunction with this military buildup, the Trump administration has moved to label a drug-trafficking network known as the “Cartel de Los Soles” as a foreign terrorist organization. This designation may pave the way for targeting Venezuelan assets and infrastructure.
When questioned about the potential use of ground troops in Venezuela, Trump responded, “No, I don’t rule out that. I don’t rule out anything. We just have to take care of Venezuela.”
The increasing presence of American forces has sparked unease among some Puerto Ricans, as the area has not experienced such military activity in over two decades. U.S. Navy veteran Juan Masini expressed concern about the scale of the deployment, suggesting it has created a “near blockade against Venezuela.” Another resident, Damien Leon, conveyed his anxiety, wondering if military action might commence soon.
Conversely, some in Puerto Rico view the arrival of U.S. personnel positively, associating it with enhanced security and an economic boost. Local business owner Osbaldo Medina noted an uptick in economic activity, stating that the U.S. presence has provided more security and support for businesses.
The U.S. military has continued launching strikes on vessels suspected of drug trafficking, with at least 22 boats targeted and 83 individuals reported killed since the operations began in September.
In response to rising tensions with the United States, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro attempted to foster peace by singing a portion of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” urging the Trump administration to pursue diplomatic solutions. This appeal highlights the complexity of the situation, as both sides navigate a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
