Thanksgiving travelers in Northeast Ohio should brace for potential disruptions as a Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued ahead of the holiday. This warning, which has been upgraded from an earlier Winter Storm Watch, will be in effect from 1 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day until 7 p.m. on Friday, affecting several counties including Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake.
In addition, a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for Trumbull County from 1 p.m. Thursday until 7 p.m. Friday due to expected heavy lake effect snow. According to the National Weather Service, significant snowfall is anticipated to begin Thursday morning, with intensity expected to build throughout the day, leading to quick accumulations on untreated surfaces.
3News Senior Meteorologist Matt Wintz has provided preliminary estimates indicating that areas under the warning could receive between 4 to 8 inches of snow, with the possibility of higher totals in localized bands. He noted that while this snowfall may not be record-breaking, the accompanying rates are expected to be significant.
With conditions becoming hazardous, especially on the roads, drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution and reduce speed. The National Weather Service has also warned that due to the nature of lake effect snow, weather conditions may vary dramatically over short distances, leading to rapidly changing visibility and road conditions.
Adding to the challenges, strong winds are also forecasted, particularly near the lakeshore, with gusts possibly exceeding 40 mph. Travelers should remain vigilant and prepared for adverse weather conditions throughout the Thanksgiving travel period.
As families gather to celebrate the holiday, staying informed about the weather will be key to ensuring a safe journey.
