Texas Tech’s McGuire Signs Seven-Year Extension as Red Raiders Eye Playoff Run

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has officially secured a new seven-year contract, confirmed by CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah. This agreement will extend McGuire’s tenure in Lubbock through the 2032 season and is set to exceed $7 million annually by its conclusion, with potential incentives that could further elevate his total earnings. The announcement comes as the No. 5 Red Raiders gear up to compete against No. 11 BYU in the Big 12 Championship Game this Saturday.

With an impressive record of 11-1, Texas Tech is making its inaugural appearance in the conference championship, and experts believe they are essentially guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff, irrespective of the game’s outcome. This pivotal moment in the program’s history reflects the culmination of McGuire’s efforts to reshape Texas Tech into a serious contender.

In his fifth season, McGuire has been instrumental in transforming the program since his hiring prior to the 2022 season. Boasting a 34-17 overall record, he has guided Texas Tech to bowl game appearances each year – a feat accomplished by only one other coach in the school’s history, the late Mike Leach. Notably, McGuire has achieved the most Big 12 wins among current coaches, with Texas Tech consistently finishing above .500 in the conference.

Significantly, the program’s strategic investments in name, image, and likeness deals, as well as revenue-sharing initiatives, have played a crucial role in attracting and retaining top-tier talent. Texas Tech recently recruited the No. 2 transfer portal class in the country, underscoring McGuire’s effective leadership and recruitment strategies.

Prior to leading the Red Raiders, McGuire made his mark as a prominent high school coach in Texas, particularly at Cedar Hill High School, where he transformed a struggling program into a state powerhouse. His success there led to a position at Baylor, where he further honed his skills as a developer of talent and recruiter.

McGuire’s new contract not only highlights his achievements but also signifies Texas Tech’s rising profile in collegiate football. As the Red Raiders aim for continued success in the Big 12 and a potential deep run in the College Football Playoff, McGuire’s leadership will be pivotal in steering the program toward new heights.
