The Texas Longhorns have been the focal point of numerous headlines throughout the regular season, particularly concerning head coach Steve Sarkisian’s future with the program. Sarkisian, however, took a strong stance to quell any speculation. Leading this narrative was former Heisman Trophy winner and ESPN analyst Desmond Howard, who hinted at a possible exit for Sarkisian after the Longhorns’ loss to Georgia on Nov. 15. Howard suggested on social media that the Texas job might open up, leaving many to wonder about Sarkisian’s position.
Ironically, it was Howard’s own Michigan Wolverines that recently faced turmoil, firing their head coach, Sherrone Moore, due to an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This turn of events led to Texas fans swiftly responding to Howard’s initial comments, highlighting the irony of the situation.
“Did Desmond Howard make a video taking out trash talking about Sherrone Moore looking for another job yet? Just curious is all,” tweeted one fan. Others chimed in with similar remarks about the Wolverines, emphasizing the unexpected circumstances of their coaching situation.
Additionally, Texas reporter CJ Vogel humorously mocked Howard by posting a video mimicking Howard’s viral moment of taking out the trash. Sarkisian himself seemed to allude to Howard’s comments during his own remarks, indirectly expressing his frustration with the speculation.
“Maybe (it’s) for some of the pundits out there that don’t cover me and cover our program on a regular basis,” Sarkisian said, referring to the unwarranted assumptions about his job security.
With Sherrone Moore’s departure, Michigan is set to embark on a challenging coaching search, adding another layer of intrigue to the college football landscape. Notably, Texas and Michigan are scheduled to face off at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando on New Year’s Eve, promising to be an exciting conclusion to both teams’ seasons. Despite the recent upheaval, there remains optimism about the future for both programs as they look to make impactful changes and pursue success on the field.
