Authorities are advising Texans to exercise caution on the roads as a winter storm approaches, particularly impacting areas like El Paso. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has issued alerts encouraging residents to stay indoors if possible. “Winter weather is headed our way, and the easiest way to stay safe is to stay off the roads,” officials stated, reminding everyone that sometimes the best approach to #DriveLikeATexan is to not drive at all.

As weather conditions began to worsen, TxDOT reported foggy conditions on Transmountain Road in El Paso. The local Streets and Maintenance Department is actively monitoring temperature and precipitation forecasts. “Public safety is our priority,” said Randy Garcia, Director of the Streets and Maintenance Department. He also emphasized that they are prepared with sand and salt mixtures and have mobilized crews and equipment to tackle potential ice buildups on roadways.

The department has activated its “Snow and Ice Response Plan,” which focuses on collaboration with public safety partners and state transportation officials to ensure that El Paso roadways remain safe. Should icy conditions emerge, crews will prioritize applying sand and salt to critical areas such as bridge overpasses, routes that connect emergency services to hospitals, and major thoroughfares with high traffic volumes.

As the winter weather unfolds, TxDOT crews are surveying roads throughout Texas to ensure safety in anticipation of snowy conditions. On the morning of January 23, El Paso experienced rain, leaving roads slick and leading to several minor accidents, particularly in West El Paso. However, no major accidents were reported, and there is no confirmation that the rain caused the incidents.

Motorists are being urged to take extra precautions during these winter weather conditions. Advisories include slowing down and reducing speeds, increasing following distances, and being cautious on bridges and overpasses where ice may form first. Additionally, drivers are reminded to treat wet-looking roads as potentially icy and to stay aware of construction zones and emergency responders.

Local officials remain committed to maintaining safe travel for all residents, and updates will be provided as the situation develops.
