Residents in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area are facing a challenging weather scenario as forecasts predict significant freezing rain and ice accumulation following an initial snowfall. This upcoming weather could lead to hazardous conditions, particularly with the risk of ice forming on tree branches and power lines, potentially causing widespread power outages.
Utility companies across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia have been proactively preparing for this inclement weather. Preparations include mobilizing resources to ensure quick response times to any outages. Tammy Sanford, director of regional power operations for Pepco, emphasized the need for readiness, stating, “We’re making sure that we’ve got adequate crews on the system to respond to outages, should they occur.”
However, the extent of ice accumulation and the location of downed power lines will significantly influence the speed of power restoration efforts. Aisha Khan from Dominion Energy warned residents that power restoration could take hours or possibly several days, stressing the importance of preparing for a gradual restoration process.
Safety remains a priority, with Khan urging residents to stay clear of any downed power lines, as they can still carry electricity. “Always assume they are energized. We ask that you stay 30 feet away,” she advised.
Both Pepco and Dominion recommend households prepare for potential outages by having adequate food and water supplies for at least 72 hours and ensuring phones are fully charged. In the event of a power outage, residents are encouraged to report it to their utility provider, rather than assuming the company is already aware.
Sanford also stressed the importance of limiting travel during these adverse conditions to facilitate the movement of emergency responders and utility crews who may need to navigate the affected areas safely.
