Team GB is set to compete in four sports on Wednesday, with opportunities to secure medals in figure skating, biathlon, and freestyle skiing.
In freestyle skiing, Makayla Gerken Schofield is poised to participate in the women’s moguls qualification two after finishing in 18th place during the first qualification round on Tuesday. To advance to the finals, which will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 PM, she must secure a position in the top 10 during her 11 AM qualification run. This marks a significant moment for Gerken Schofield, who made her Olympic debut at Beijing 2022 and achieved Team GB’s best-ever finish of eighth. She has been adapting to the competitive landscape since the retirement of her siblings from the sport.
In the biathlon, Shawna Pendry is set to make her Olympic debut in the women’s 15km individual event. Pendry becomes the first female British biathlete to participate at the Olympics since Amanda Lightfoot in 2018. A native of Derby, Pendry relocated to Font-Romeu in France at the age of four, where she embraced biathlon while helping in her parents’ brewery. She previously represented Team GB at the Winter Youth Olympics in 2020.
In curling, the men’s team round-robin event kicks off with Team Mouat facing off against China at 7:05 PM. The team, comprising Bruce Mouat, Hammy McMillan, Bobby Lammie, and Grant Hardie, previously clinched a silver medal at the Beijing Games and is back with a strong determination to outperform their last performance. Mouat, however, faced disappointment in the mixed doubles after losing the bronze medal match to Italy alongside teammate Jen Dodds.
Lastly, the figure skating ice dance competition highlights two British pairs competing in the free dance. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, currently in fourth place after the rhythm dance with a score of 85.47, will showcase a Scottish-inspired medley. Meanwhile, Phebe Bekker and James Hernandez, ranked 16th with a score of 72.46, will present their take on Romeo and Juliet.
With such diverse representation across sports, Team GB aims for success as the events unfold throughout the day in Milano Cortina.
