Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the bassist for the iconic British band The Stone Roses, has passed away at the age of 63, as confirmed by his family. His brother, Greg, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, saying, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother.” He also included a tender tribute, stating, “RIP RKID.”
Mani, who joined The Stone Roses in 1987, played a pivotal role in the band’s rise to fame, contributing to their self-titled debut album and the critically acclaimed “Second Coming.” He remained with the group until their breakup in 1996. Following this, he joined the band Primal Scream, lending his talents until 2011 when he reunited with The Stone Roses.
His passing follows just two years after the death of his wife, Imelda Mounfield, who passed away from stage 4 bowel cancer in November 2020. The couple had twin boys together, born in 2012.
The music community is expressing deep sorrow, with tributes pouring in from contemporaries. Ian Brown, the frontman of The Stone Roses, posted a heartfelt message on social media saying, “REST IN PEACE MANi X.” Liam Gallagher of Oasis expressed his shock and devastation over the news, while Shaun Ryder from Happy Mondays extended his condolences to Mani’s family, particularly his twin boys. Rowetta, also of Happy Mondays, shared her love and sadness, stating, “Back with your Imelda, Mani. Going to miss you so much.”
Tim Burgess, the frontman of The Charlatans, remembered Mani with fondness, sharing a picture and reflecting on their friendship: “One of the absolute best in every way – such a beautiful friend.” Ian McCulloch, lead singer of Echo & the Bunnymen, conveyed his deep affection for Mani, describing him as a brother.
