Solomon Islands Opens New Fisheries Office in Noro, Signals Sustainable Growth

Solomon Islands Opens New Fisheries Office, Signals Regional Impact

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) has lauded the Solomon Islands Government for its dedication to fisheries development with the official inauguration of a new office for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in Noro, Western Province, on November 10, 2025. FFA Director-General Noan David Pakop attended the event, emphasizing the significance of this development in acknowledging the fishing industry as a vital element of the national economy.

Pakop praised the establishment of the new office, marking it as a crucial step toward strengthening support for the fisheries sector. He highlighted that the office will enhance the delivery of essential services in the region, fostering sustainable growth in the industry. Noro Township is already benefitting from the operations of National Fisheries Development Ltd. and Soltuna, a tuna-processing facility that plays a pivotal role in local employment and the broader fisheries operations.

Currently, approximately 30% of the fish harvested from Solomon Islands waters is processed at the Soltuna cannery, making a significant impact on local income and national economic activity. The aim of the new ministry office is to further enhance these contributions and promote sustainable fisheries practices.

Pakop pointed out that this initiative could serve as a model for other Pacific nations, encouraging them to position their fisheries authorities closer to industry operations. This level of proximity is expected to improve the effectiveness of exports, imports, fish landings, and processing activities, ensuring compliance with both national and international standards.

The event also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among various government departments. Pakop emphasized that support from institutions like the Finance Department and the Data Centre is crucial for the effective implementation of policies designed for sustainable fisheries management.

The presence of Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and Fisheries Minister Bradley Tovosia at the inauguration further reinforced the government’s commitment to prioritizing fisheries development, which is critical for the economy of the Solomon Islands and the broader Pacific region. It’s noteworthy that the Pacific region accounts for over half of the global tuna supply, underscoring its critical influence on the world stage.

In conclusion, Pakop congratulated the Solomon Islands Government and the people of Western Province, viewing this development as a significant milestone and a testament to strong leadership in promoting sustainable fisheries. This step sets a hopeful outlook for a more sustainable future in the fisheries sector in the region.
