The prolonged cold wave that began last week shows no signs of abating, with extreme temperatures persistently hovering around -10 degrees Celsius expected this week. Currently, Seoul is experiencing temperatures close to -8 degrees, with a wind chill making it feel like -11 degrees. Daytime temperatures are also expected to remain below freezing, making it crucial for residents to dress warmly and manage their health effectively.

Additionally, vigilance against wildfires is necessary. The eastern regions are facing increasingly dry conditions, with a dry warning issued for Seoul and parts of the metropolitan area, exacerbated by strong winds. Residents are urged to remain cautious to prevent fire hazards.

Today, the country is largely overcast, with snowfall expected in the western areas overnight. By tomorrow morning, the mountains of Jeju could see up to 5 centimeters of snow, while western Honam may receive between 1 to 3 centimeters. Other regions may experience minor accumulations or flurries. Given the freezing temperatures, icy conditions are likely, increasing the risk of slipping accidents.

Current temperatures show Seoul at -7.8 degrees and Daegu at -7.7 degrees, indicating a continuation of last week’s chill. The afternoon highs are forecasted to be 0 degrees in Seoul, 4 degrees in Gwangju, and 8 degrees in Busan. Thankfully, this cold snap is expected to ease following the weekend, with clearer skies anticipated after the snow tapers off in the western regions.

Amid the freezing temperatures, incidents of water meter freezing have surged, with over 460 reported cases in Seoul alone last week. To prevent such issues, it is recommended to insulate meter boxes and pipes and to let water drip slowly.

As the country endures this cold wave, the hope remains that conditions will improve soon, bringing milder weather for all.
