In a recent court hearing, the qualification of Dr. Luke Nasedra, Medical Superintendent of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, was questioned by Thakur Punja’s attorney during discussions over a bail variation. Punja is facing multiple allegations regarding his possession of illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana.

During the proceedings, Punja’s defense attorney, Samuela Heritage, highlighted the client’s ongoing medical issues stemming from a car accident last year. Heritage stated that Punja urgently requires medical attention, specifically a Lumbar Disk surgery, before continuing with the court processes.

Dr. Nasedra was called to provide the state’s perspective on Punja’s medical condition, particularly regarding the necessity for overseas medical treatment. He concluded that Punja was not in a life-threatening condition that justified immediate release for medical travel.

However, Heritage challenged Dr. Nasedra’s qualifications, noting that he is an anesthesiologist and questioning the relevance of his opinion in this specific case, which involves a neurological condition that Punja is reportedly suffering from. The state’s position defended Dr. Nasedra’s expertise, asserting that his insights were highly relevant given his role as superintendent of the national hospital.

The court has decided to adjourn the matter until February 6, when a ruling on the bail variation is expected. As the legal situation unfolds, both the defense and prosecution continue to navigate the complexities of medical and legal opinions surrounding Punja’s case.
