Rotuma Incest Case: Father Set to Be Sentenced in High Court

Sentencing Looms in Rotuma Incest Case After Guilty Plea

A 48-year-old man is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to incest involving his 18-year-old biological daughter in Rotuma. The plea was entered earlier this year, with charges of incest by a relative and sexual assault stemming from incidents that took place in 2025.

This week, the High Court in Suva, under the guidance of Justice Daniel Goundar, accepted the summary of facts presented during the court proceedings. Representing the prosecution was ODPP Lawyer Yelena Sautu. Following the hearing, the man was remanded in custody, with plans to remain detained until December 4.

The serious nature of this case has garnered significant attention from the public, shining a light on broader societal issues surrounding familial abuse. It underscores the necessity for robust legal frameworks and societal awareness to protect vulnerable individuals within families and highlight the importance of addressing such disturbing incidents effectively.
