Novak Djokovic is ready to make his mark at the Australian Open, set to face Pedro Martinez in his opening match at the iconic Rod Laver Arena. The Serbian tennis star, a record 10-time champion at this event, enters the tournament after a successful run at the Athens Open in November, where he triumphed over Lorenzo Musetti.

At 38 years old, Djokovic has acknowledged that he may not possess the same level of play he once did, yet he remains a formidable contender. After unfortunately retiring in the semi-finals of the Australian Open last year due to injury, Djokovic is eager for a strong comeback. It has been two decades since he lost his opening match at this prestigious tournament, making him a daunting opponent for Martinez.

While Djokovic is currently seeded fourth, his confidence is buoyed by his recent victory in Athens, where he lost only a single set throughout the tournament. His last opening round loss on hard courts dates back to March at the Indian Wells Open, where Botic van de Zandschulp managed to defeat him in a three-set battle. Remarkably, Djokovic remains a powerful server, hitting 271 aces last year and winning 90% of his service games on hard courts. He also managed to convert 45% of his break point opportunities, showcasing his competitive edge.

On the other hand, Pedro Martinez comes into the Australian Open with positive momentum, having only dropped one set at the Bengaluru Challenger Open. The Spaniard aims to advance to the second round for the second consecutive year after defeating Italy’s Luciano Darderi last year—though that victory was marked by Darderi’s retirement. A win against Djokovic would mark a significant milestone in Martinez’s career, as it would be only his second victory over a top 10 player, following his successful match against Casper Ruud in 2024.

Despite his recent triumphs, Martinez has struggled historically on hard courts, losing six of his last seven opening matches. Although he recorded a respectable 71% service game win rate on hard surfaces last year, he contended with issues, including 66 double faults.

While predictions favor Djokovic to secure a win in three sets, the upcoming match promises excitement, as the seasoned veteran brings a wealth of experience to the court against the rising talent of Martinez. As Djokovic aims to defy age and reclaim his former glory, fans can anticipate an intriguing matchup that showcases the enduring spirit of competitive tennis.
