Residents and vendors in Nakasi are expressing their concerns over a persistent foul odor believed to emanate from the local abattoir. This unpleasant smell has been affecting not just Nakasi but also the nearby Waidamudamu and Wainibuku areas.
Local resident Joan Watkins described the odor as a serious health hazard that has been a frequent issue since she first moved to Nakasi. “I have been smelling this foul odour ever since I started living in Nakasi. It has been going on for years, and it is unpleasant. You can smell it both in the morning and in the afternoon,” Watkins lamented. She emphasized that the health risks are especially concerning given the presence of children in the area and the proximity of a local hospital.
Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture indicated plans to relocate the abattoir due to ongoing developments and the establishment of new businesses in Nakasi. Residents hope that the authorities will take swift action to address their concerns. Additionally, inquiries have been directed to the Fiji Meat Industries Board regarding the situation, as residents seek clarity and a resolution to the ongoing problem.
As the community rallies for change, there is a glimmer of hope that their voices will prompt the necessary actions to improve the living conditions in Nakasi and ensure a healthier environment for its residents.
