A new era has begun for the Fiji Waters Flying Fijians coaching team with the appointment of former lock Ifereimi Rawaqa as the assistant forwards coach and national contact coach. Rawaqa is poised to work closely alongside head coach Mick Byrne and the rest of the coaching staff to strengthen the team’s forward pack and oversee the national contact area program, both of which are vital in contemporary Test rugby.

This strategic appointment comes as the Flying Fijians prepare for the 2026 international season and lay the essential groundwork for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Rawaqa expressed his appreciation for the opportunity, emphasizing the trust Coach Mick has extended to him. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity and the trust shown by coach Mick, and I’m looking forward to this new role. It’s an honour to work with Fiji Rugby,” he said.

Rawaqa brings a wealth of playing experience to his new position, having been a pivotal figure for the Flying Fijians during the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups. His deep understanding of rugby, coupled with his strong ties to Fiji’s rugby heritage, adds considerable value to the coaching staff. Notably, Rawaqa also achieved success in sevens rugby by lifting the Melrose Cup in 2005 in Hong Kong, highlighting his high-level playing background.

Head coach Mick Byrne expressed excitement over Rawaqa’s integration into the coaching team, recognizing the distinctive expertise he contributes. The Fiji Rugby Union believes that Rawaqa’s addition will enhance the coaching framework and reaffirm their commitment to blending Fijian traditions with a high-performance outlook for the future. This new direction is expected to significantly benefit the Flying Fijians as they embark on their ambitious journey toward major international competitions.
