Rarawai Mill Reopens After Fire Repairs

Rarawai Sugar Mill Reopens After Fire — What’s Next for Fiji?

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has announced the much-anticipated reopening of the Rarawai Mill, set for tomorrow, following extensive restoration efforts in response to a fire that affected the mill’s powerhouse on September 17.

FSC’s Chief Executive Officer, Bhan Pratap Singh, confirmed that all essential repairs and safety measures have been successfully implemented, allowing the mill to resume operations securely. “Comprehensive restoration, safety assessments, and operational readiness checks have been finalized to ensure the facility is fully prepared for safe and efficient operations,” Singh stated.

The company highlighted that while all significant maintenance issues resulting from the fire have been resolved, a few minor tasks are still in progress. However, Singh assured that these will not impede the start-up or the ongoing crushing process. The engineering and technical teams worked closely with relevant authorities to ensure compliance with required safety and operational standards prior to the reopening.

Farmers can begin delivering sugar cane to the mill again starting tomorrow, with FSC field staff coordinating efforts alongside growers and supply teams. “FSC remains committed to supporting growers and ensuring continuity of supply for the remainder of the crushing season,” remarked Singh. He also expressed confidence in the mill’s readiness, stating, “Our focus now is on maintaining operational stability and delivering smooth, consistent milling operations moving forward.”

This reopening represents a positive development for local sugar producers and the broader industry, reinforcing the commitment to enhanced safety and operational efficiency. As operations resume, the FSC aims to strengthen ties with growers and ensure a successful crushing season ahead.
