David Brooks, the prominent author and columnist, has been appointed as a Presidential Senior Fellow at Yale’s Jackson School of Global Affairs, starting on February 1. This new role is part of an initiative launched by Yale President Maurie McInnis, designed to enhance public discourse and strengthen the connection between higher education and society.

President McInnis expressed enthusiasm for Brooks’ diverse ability to synthesize ideas across various disciplines, highlighting the importance of his insights in connecting Yale’s research with global knowledge and innovation. The Presidential Senior Fellowship program aims to counteract growing skepticism towards higher education by making university resources more accessible to the public.

Throughout the spring semester, Brooks will facilitate a series of events, including lectures and discussions featuring voices from different perspectives. His plans include developing initiatives to promote public engagement with the liberal arts, such as through free online courses and a new weekly video podcast for The Atlantic. This podcast will showcase discussions with academics and experts addressing fundamental questions about humanity, democracy, and more.

James Levinsohn, dean of the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, stated that fostering serious engagement with diverse ideas is crucial for preparing students for public service. Having Brooks at Yale will provide students with valuable insights into questions of character and ethics—critical elements in today’s polarized world.

Brooks, who has previously served as a Senior Fellow at the Jackson School and contributed to major publications including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, remarked on the current challenges facing American society, emphasizing the need for a renewed discussion around purpose and national identity. His commitment to bridging divides through conversation is seen as particularly timely in an increasingly polarized climate.

Colleagues such as Walter Isaacson and Oona Hathaway noted the importance of Brooks’ role in fostering crucial conversations that transcend political and ideological boundaries. This appointment is seen as an opportunity to enrich Yale and its community while addressing significant societal challenges in the pursuit of a brighter future.
