Raiwai Volleyball is energizing this year’s Vulaca Volleyball Championship with a strong emphasis on youth development, a mission that has defined the club since its founding in the 1990s. Established by a group dedicated to keeping local youth engaged in sports—particularly during rugby’s off-season—the club has developed a vibrant volleyball culture within the community.

Frances Lanyon, a founding member of Raiwai Volleyball and the head coach of the women’s team, shared insights into the club’s beginnings: “We founded Raiwai Volleyball back in the 90s because of the growing number of kids in the area. We thought it would be a good alternative to keep youths involved in sports when rugby is in its off-season.” This grassroots initiative has evolved into a flourishing community hub that continually nurtures talent.

This year’s championship showcases impressive performances from Raiwai’s youth players, especially the women’s team, thanks to the introduction of structured age-group competitions. Lanyon underscores the significance of developing talent from within, as they draw players from under-16, under-17, and under-19 categories. “This year there are a lot of young players, especially on our women’s team. We’re trying to breed our own and develop them, and it has improved a lot since last year,” she noted.

Raiwai women’s team, comprised of one of the youngest squads in the competition, has displayed remarkable competitiveness throughout the two-day tournament, managing to secure wins against more experienced teams. The roster includes players ranging from those in Class Eight to those in Form Five, illustrating the club’s dedication to youth development.

With approximately 30 players participating in the weekly club competition, Raiwai Volleyball reflects a healthy growth in engagement. As the association competes in this year’s Vulaca Volleyball Championship, which concludes today, it remains committed to fostering opportunities for young athletes. This focus not only instills a passion for volleyball but also fortifies community connections, heralding a promising future for local sports involvement.
