While the Raiders’ defense showed flashes of promise, their overall performance highlighted significant weaknesses, especially in generating turnovers. The team’s passing defense ranked moderately, allowing the 10th fewest passing touchdowns with 23 and the 14th least passing yards at 3,417. Nevertheless, a glaring issue was their ability to secure interceptions, as they managed only eight throughout the season.
As the Raiders prepare for free agency, CBS Sports’ JP Acosta believes that the team should target cornerback Riq Woolen of the Seattle Seahawks. Acosta notes that while the Seahawks will likely make efforts to retain Woolen, he presents an excellent fit for the Raiders. Given the Raiders’ struggles in pass defense, Woolen’s potential to rise as a premier cornerback could provide a significant upgrade.
Woolen, who previously recorded six interceptions and defended 16 passes in 2022, is seen as a player capable of revitalizing the Raiders’ secondary. Despite a mid-season dip in discussions surrounding his future, Woolen ended the regular season strongly, showcasing his speed and cover skills.
In addition to Woolen, there are indications that the Raiders could pursue other connections from the Seahawks. NFL writer Tyler Sullivan pointed out that with a young quarterback such as Fernando Mendoza poised to develop, the Raiders might benefit from the experience of Klint Kubiak. Sullivan suggests that Kubiak’s offensive acumen could bring much-needed stability to the Raiders’ coaching staff, especially as they navigate a challenging and expensive transitional period.
