Port of Imbituba Surpasses 6 Million Tons, Sets Sights on 7 Million by Year-End

The Port of Imbituba achieved a historic milestone in 2025, surpassing six million tons in cargo movement. October proved to be the busiest month, with the port handling 714.7 thousand tons and accommodating 27 vessels—marking the highest monthly volume for the year. From January through October, the port processed a total of 6.17 million tons, reinforcing its strategic importance in southern Brazil.

Exports contributed significantly, totaling 2.53 million tons, primarily driven by pet coke and cornmeal. On the import side, the port received 2.86 million tons, reflecting a 2.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The record-breaking figures in October included bituminous coal, salt, and industrial inputs, marking the highest monthly registration since the port began operations.

Cabotage traffic also saw growth, with 547.3 thousand tons shipped and 136.8 thousand tons discharged, a 3.8% rise from the previous year. Transshipment activity more than doubled, reaching 56 thousand tons loaded and 44.9 thousand tons unloaded, showcasing the port’s versatility as a logistics hub.

Solid bulk cargoes dominated operations, accounting for 77.8% of the total, with notable volumes of petroleum coke, sugar, bituminous coal, salt, and cornmeal. The container segment also exhibited consistent growth, exceeding one million tons and representing 17.3% of the annual volume, indicating a growing appeal for high-value freight.

According to Beto Martins, the Secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways of Santa Catarina, this robust performance can be attributed to investments in modernization, dredging, berth expansion, and the digitization of processes. Christiano Lopes, the CEO of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba, emphasized that efficient and predictable operations have attracted new operators, further enhancing the port’s presence in international markets.

If the current pace is maintained, the Port of Imbituba is on track to exceed seven million tons by the end of the year. Between January and October, import and export operations generated over $1.44 billion, underscoring the port’s crucial role in Santa Catarina’s trade balance.
