The Indianapolis Colts have officially signed veteran quarterback Philip Rivers to their 53-man roster just in time for their upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks. This move comes after a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Daniel Jones, leaving the team in need of experienced leadership on the field.
At 44 years old, Rivers was added to the practice squad earlier this week amid significant injuries to the Colts’ quarterback staff. Reports indicate that he is expected to start against Seattle, although the team is keeping specifics under wraps until the kickoff.
Colts spokesman Matt Conti confirmed, “Our team won’t officially announce a starter before kickoff tomorrow.”
Rivers, who retired in January 2021 after a successful 17-year career in the NFL, initially stepped away from football to focus on coaching high school football in Fairhope, Alabama. He explained that he had not considered a return to the game until just 48 hours before rejoining the Colts. “I try to keep it as simple as that. A game I love to play. A game that I thought I was done playing,” Rivers said at a press conference.
After a string of injuries within the team, including Jones’ torn right Achilles and both Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson dealing with their own health concerns, Rivers’ comeback appears timely. In addition to Rivers, the Colts also have Brett Rypien on the active roster to bolster their quarterback options.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen played a crucial role in encouraging Rivers to return, having previously coached him during their tenure with the Chargers. “He didn’t forget how to throw a football,” Steichen stated, recalling the quarterback’s impressive workout when he rejoined the team.
For Rivers, this opportunity to return to the field represents more than just a game; it’s a chance to embrace a newfound excitement in a sport he cherishes. Despite having no expectations of a comeback, he felt compelled to answer the call. “But something about it excited me. Just kind of one of those deals – a door opens and you can either walk through,” Rivers reflected.
As kickoff approaches, Rivers is balancing his trademark optimism with a touch of apprehension as he prepares for this new chapter. His children are reportedly supportive yet nervous about their father’s return to the NFL.
Kickoff for the Colts and Seahawks matchup is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET, and fans are eager to see how this unexpected comeback story unfolds.
