Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has expressed his satisfaction with the recent performances of young props Tim Hyot and Atunaisa Sokobale during the team’s European tour. Both players made their international debuts, demonstrating their capability to handle the rigors of high-level rugby despite their relative inexperience.
Byrne commended Sokobale for his determination, particularly noting his impressive try against Spain that showcased his ability to rise to challenges. “He really showed some real desire, and that’s what we’re looking for in those young guys,” Byrne remarked. He also praised Hyot, who stepped up effectively in place of Eroni Mawi, underscoring the significance of these experiences for their development.
“It’s a great opportunity for them to see what it’s like to be an international player,” Byrne emphasized, as both players adapted to the pace and intensity of the game at this level.
Additionally, the tour served as a vital assessment for the coaching staff regarding squad depth, with player Pita Gus Sowakula given the chance to showcase his skills. Byrne noted that integrating Sowakula provided valuable insights, signifying the team’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
Byrne outlined the expectations for these young prospects, stating, “We don’t need them to be match winners or anything like that. We want them to be the best they can be for themselves.” This approach aims to build confidence and provide experiences that will prepare them for significant roles in the future.
As the Flying Fijians prepare for the upcoming Nations Cup and future competitions, the development of promising talents like Hyot and Sokobale will be crucial for the team’s long-term success. The supportive environment fostered by Byrne and his coaching staff is expected to enhance future performances, creating an optimistic outlook for Fiji’s rugby ambitions.
