As the world turns its attention to Brazil for COP30, Mosese Bulitavu, Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, has called for transformative actions aimed at addressing the needs of the most vulnerable nations. Speaking at a pre-conference event, Bulitavu stressed the importance of moving away from traditional approaches and instead focusing on actionable outcomes for communities already facing the dire impacts of climate change.
Representing the collective voice of the Pacific nations, Bulitavu stated, “This work is about our survival,” underlining the urgency of international commitments to tackle issues faced by coastal communities in Fiji and beyond. Rising sea levels and extreme weather have displaced numerous families and threatened cultural identities and heritage in the region.
During his address, he praised Brazil’s commitment to ocean conservation and emphasized the need to incorporate oceanic concerns into climate dialogue. “This COP is critical as we prepare for the next, where Fiji will co-chair the Ocean dialogue,” he mentioned, demonstrating a proactive stance to ensure that oceanic issues remain a permanent fixture in climate discussions.
In addition, Fiji and other Pacific nations are supporting Australia’s bid to host COP31, which is envisioned to be the first-ever “Pacific COP.” This initiative aims to showcase the vulnerabilities within the region and highlight the essential need to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Bulitavu’s expressions of solidarity among Pacific leaders underscore the power of collective advocacy. “Our voice is stronger when we are united — one family, one Ocean, one Pacific,” he concluded, reinforcing the call for collaborative efforts to confront climate challenges head-on.
