The Minister of Tourism for Samoa, Fata Ryan Schuster, has emphasized the need for enhanced regional unity to safeguard Pacific cultures and dignity in the evolving digital landscape. His remarks came during the opening ceremony of the Sarong and Talent Night for the 37th Miss Pacific Islands Pageant at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa in Nadi.
In front of distinguished guests, contestants, and dignitaries, Minister Schuster articulated that the pageant represents much more than a celebration of beauty; it serves as a vital regional platform for amplifying the collective voice of the Pacific while fostering leadership, advocacy, and community service.
Welcoming participants from across the Pacific, he expressed his gratitude as chairman of the event, noting the importance of celebrating Pacific identity, pride, and unity. This year’s theme, “One Pacific. One Voice: Standing Together for Online Safety,” resonates strongly in our increasingly digital world.
Minister Schuster acknowledged the dual nature of technology, which offers vast opportunities for connection and education, while also posing threats to personal dignity, cultural integrity, and overall well-being. He urged a commitment to uphold core Pacific values—respect, community, and storytelling—both on and offline, calling for a collective stand against cyber harm and misinformation.
He reassured the contestants that they are already champions for their bravery in representing their nations and addressing significant regional issues. He encouraged them to embrace their roles with confidence, humility, and pride.
In closing, he expressed his appreciation for the Government and people of Fiji, along with sponsors and organizers, for their role in hosting this prestigious event. He wished all contestants a successful and unforgettable pageant experience as they come together to celebrate their shared culture and talent in a spirit of solidarity.
