The reigning Carabao Cup champions face a significant challenge as they prepare to visit the Etihad Stadium, aiming to overturn a two-goal deficit after their 2-0 loss in the first leg at St. James’ Park last month. Newcastle United’s manager Eddie Howe remains optimistic despite being without key players such as captain Bruno Guimarães, who missed the recent 4-1 defeat to Liverpool. The participation of midfielder Lewis Miley is also uncertain after he was an unused substitute in that match.

In his latest press briefing, Howe shared his thoughts ahead of the crucial cup tie, underscoring the team’s ambition to reach their third Carabao Cup final in four seasons. He expressed disappointment over conceding a late second goal in the first leg but emphasized his belief in the squad’s ability to perform on any stage. “We believe we have the players that can go to any stadium in the world and perform and score goals,” he stated, noting the collective spirit within the team.

Howe also addressed the status of Guimarães, indicating that while he is progressing well, he is unlikely to be ready for this match, with hopes pinned on his availability for the weekend. He reassured fans regarding defender Sven Botman’s fitness but echoed uncertainty about Miley’s readiness.

Highlighting Joe Willock’s resurgence, Howe praised the midfielder’s recent performances, asserting his importance to the squad. “Joe has been really good. It’s a return to his best form, and I think he’s a very, very good player,” said Howe, who dismissed any notions of letting Willock go during the transfer window.

Looking ahead to the match against Manchester City, Howe remarked on the need to build on the positives from recent performances. He noted that if the team can combine the best aspects from their matches against Liverpool and Paris, they would stand a strong chance. “If we have that mentality that we’re going to try and get all the disciplines of our game in a good place and attack the game, let’s see what we can do,” he concluded, leaving fans hopeful for an inspiring performance.
