Eco Guardians Fiji is calling on individuals to take accountability for their litter during New Year celebrations, as a noticeable increase in rubbish has been reported on popular beaches. Joanna Caine, the organization’s Chief Executive Officer and Project Manager, has raised concerns about a worrying trend where local beaches, stretching from Lami to Pacific Harbour and throughout the Galoa corridor, are experiencing heightened pollution, especially during festive times.
Caine stressed that while families are encouraged to enjoy the beautiful Fijian beaches, they often leave behind significant amounts of litter—including disposable diapers, plastic bottles, takeaway containers, and food scraps. “I witnessed how beautiful and clean the beach was, but the situation changed drastically with so many cars parked nearby… the amount of rubbish on the beach, particularly diapers and plastic bottles, was alarming,” Caine remarked.
The accumulation of litter not only diminishes the natural allure of these sites, which are key attractions for visitors, but it also poses a threat to marine life and attracts stray animals. Caine is urging beachgoers, especially those arriving by vehicle, to take their rubbish home. She highlighted that many parents often neglect proper disposal methods for diapers and leave food remnants like barbecue bones on the shoreline.
Sailosi Natadra, a sixteen-year-old resident of Wainiyabia in Serua, shared his thoughts on the recurring litter problem, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness, particularly at picnic spots. “It is vital to keep these areas clean. It pains us landowners when we see litter along the shores after picnics. Please take your rubbish with you and dispose of it properly,” he stated.
Eco Guardians Fiji emphasizes that safeguarding the environment is a collective responsibility and underscores the need for greater awareness during peak holiday seasons when beach attendance increases. This ongoing appeal serves as a hopeful reminder that through mutual effort and responsibility, the pristine beauty of Fiji’s beaches can be preserved for all to enjoy.
