The Pacific region is set to play a vital role in the upcoming climate negotiations at COP31, according to Dirk Wagener, the United Nations Resident Coordinator. He underscored the urgent need for the next Conference of the Parties to establish stronger commitments for global climate action that accurately reflect the significant risks faced by communities in the Pacific.

Wagener reaffirmed the UN’s dedication to supporting Pacific nations in translating global agreements into actionable results. A key component of this effort is the newly launched United Nations Pacific SDG Acceleration Pooled Fund, which aims to create a collaborative framework for partners eager to fast-track progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, with a strong emphasis on data and digital solutions.

Throughout the past year, the UN has collaborated with governments, local communities, and regional organizations to bolster climate resilience and enhance cooperation within the Pacific. This initiative has included support for efficient disaster response, peacebuilding efforts, the promotion of human rights and gender equality, as well as improvements in health and education services.

One of the standout achievements in this mission was the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion concerning state obligations related to climate change. This opinion marks a significant milestone for the Pacific region, affirming that climate action is a legal obligation for states, which has direct repercussions for nations that neglect their commitments.

Wagener highlighted that the Advisory Opinion amplifies the call for climate justice from Pacific Small Island Developing States, urging a rise in ambition and robust support in vital areas such as climate finance, technology, and capacity building. He closed with an inspiring message urging continued momentum to ensure the prosperity of every island, to elevate every voice, and to affirm that the Blue Pacific remains a symbol of resilience, hope, and collective advancement.
