WHO Opens Refurbished Office in Micronesia to Boost Pacific Health

New WHO Pacific Office Opens in Pohnpei to Boost Micronesia’s Health Resilience

Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for the Western Pacific, underscored the pressing health challenges confronting the Pacific region during the inauguration of the newly revamped WHO multi-country office in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. This visit marks Dr. Piukala’s inaugural trip to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), occurring at a pivotal moment as the four autonomous states grapple with critical issues in their health sector.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Dr. Piukala expressed enthusiasm over the establishment of the office, which will also provide support to neighboring Pacific Island nations such as Palau and the Marshall Islands. He highlighted the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and the threat posed by climate-related emergencies, which together are exerting greater pressure on health systems throughout Micronesia.

Dr. Piukala also recognized the essential support needed from governmental and civil society partners to effectively tackle these urgent health challenges. He noted that, despite its modest size under the leadership of newly appointed Representative Dr. Roderico Ofrin, the office’s impact on public health in the region is significant and far-reaching.

During his four-day visit, Dr. Piukala intends to meet with government officials and health workers, as well as tour project sites to gain a deeper understanding of ongoing health initiatives and identify areas requiring additional support. He extended his appreciation to the WHO staff in Pohnpei for their commitment to enhancing healthcare in the region, fostering a spirit of collaboration and optimism for future advancements in addressing health issues in Micronesia.

This initiative not only highlights WHO’s dedication to reinforcing health resilience in the face of unique challenges faced by island communities but also reflects a broader commitment to establishing partnerships that aim to improve the well-being of populations across the Pacific.
