This important gathering, organized by the Ministry of Policing, focused on discussions surrounding a draft counter-narcotics framework designed to combat these growing issues.
A central voice at the meeting was Venina Vakarusese, who articulated her concerns regarding what she views as deficient leadership among village headmen. She pointed out that the current lack of effective guidance is failing to engage youth meaningfully within their communities.
Vakarusese emphasized the need for regular meetings specifically targeting young people, where they would have the chance to receive education on the dangers associated with drug use. “There should be village meetings called regularly, where young people can be addressed by police representatives or relevant authorities regarding the effects of drugs,” she noted. Her insistence on this action highlights the critical importance of ongoing support, as she believes young individuals remain vulnerable to negative influences.
Furthermore, she advocated for the inclusion of families in these preventive efforts. “These types of village meetings should be inclusive of families, where parents should also attend and be educated to help our youth,” Vakarusese suggested. On the matter of leadership accountability, Vakarusese called for the replacement of ineffective village headmen with more dynamic individuals who are enthusiastic about the welfare of their youth. “If the village headman is not doing his job, let’s have someone that is vocal and enthusiastic about the need to help our youth,” she asserted.
