Naiyala High School (NHS) has made an impressive comeback in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) competition after a three-year hiatus, showcasing the skills of both its under-15 and under-17 teams. The under-17 team achieved a close 6-0 victory over Ratu Simione Matanitobua College, following a preceding 10-4 win by the under-15 team against the same opponent.

This resurgence is significant as NHS had to withdraw from the competition during the previous two to three seasons due to financial difficulties. Coach Siaki Baba pointed out that NHS, being a smaller school with limited resources, faced challenges compared to its larger rivals. Nevertheless, the school has rejuvenated its spirit, bolstered by commendable academic achievements, including a 100% pass rate for year 13 students in last year’s external exams.

Coach Baba emphasized that while winning is a primary goal, gaining experience and exposure for the players is equally important. He remarked, “Our goal is not just to compete, but to win and expose these boys to the expected level of competition.” With scouts present at games, he hopes that some of the players will catch their attention.

Despite their recent victories, Coach Baba acknowledged that the team has areas to improve, particularly in tackling and technical skills. He noted the challenge of developing a competitive team with smaller players and stressed the need for continued growth, stating, “The first half was tough, and we need to focus on improving our tackling and technical approach.”

Baba made a call for assistance from the Naiyala community and alumni, highlighting the importance of financial support and food provisions for the players during competitions. He appealed, “We need your support in terms of finance and food, especially for the boys’ lunches.”

The return of Naiyala High School to rugby league is not only a testament to resilience but also a beacon of hope for young athletes in the region, illustrating the potential that lies within the community’s support.
