This offseason, the Cleveland Guardians have seen limited movement in the free agency market, maintaining much of the same roster as the previous year. However, recent developments hint at an exciting potential addition to the team as spring training approaches.
Zack Meisel of The Athletic has reported that former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins was spotted in the Guardians’ clubhouse wearing team gear, suggesting that a signing may be on the horizon. Although no official announcement has been made, Hoskins’ presence in Guardians attire signals a strong likelihood that he could soon become a member of the team.
Hoskins, who has spent six seasons with the Phillies, is known for his power-hitting capabilities, amassing 148 home runs, including a standout 34 homers during the 2018 season. He also led Major League Baseball in walks in 2019 and boasts a career OPS of .820. Last season, while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers, Hoskins recorded a .237 batting average with a .748 OPS, hitting 12 home runs in 90 games. While his performance may have dipped from his prime, he remains a solid option for a lineup in need of power.
If Hoskins officially signs with the Guardians, he could seamlessly integrate into the starting lineup, serving as either a designated hitter or first baseman. However, the dynamics of the roster will shift, especially with Kyle Manzardo and CJ Kafus already in key positions.
The prospect of adding a seasoned slugger like Hoskins brings a layer of excitement to the Guardians as they gear up for the new season. If confirmed, this signing could energize both the team and its fanbase as they look forward to a promising Spring.
