The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has recognized the ongoing flooding issues affecting Malakua Road in Qeleloa, Nadi, and has developed a comprehensive master plan aimed at significant infrastructure upgrades. In the short term, the FRA is executing maintenance work to alleviate current problems associated with heavy rainfall. This includes crucial tasks such as grading, compaction, and, where necessary, the re-sheeting of the road.

For long-term solutions, the FRA has outlined a detailed strategy that includes enhancing the drainage system and replacing the Nakia Bridge. These upgrades will involve elevating the road above level with surrounding sugarcane fields and modifying the drainage system to better handle surface water runoff from both the road and adjacent areas.

The FRA has confirmed that the permanent improvements, including the Nakia Bridge replacement, are scheduled to take place in the financial year 2036-2027. Recognizing the importance of Malakua Road as a major pathway for schoolchildren, the FRA intends to include additional cross culverts next to the existing structure to enable faster water discharge during heavy rains.

Responding to concerns from local residents regarding the workmanship of subcontractors, the FRA reassures the community that rigorous monitoring and quality checks are conducted throughout the construction process. If any workmanship issues arise, contractors will be held accountable to resolve and correct the problems at their expense.

This proactive stance not only addresses immediate flooding challenges but also bolsters the long-term resilience of Nadi’s infrastructure, benefiting the local community and enhancing safety for its residents. The concerted efforts by the FRA signal a bright future for improved infrastructure, fostering confidence and stability for the people of Nadi.
