An Extreme Cold Watch has been announced for parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia by the National Weather Service (NWS), predicting dangerously low temperatures from late Friday night through Sunday morning.
Forecasters caution that wind chill temperatures could plunge to between zero and 10 degrees below zero east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, while areas west could experience wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero. The advisory covers Washington, DC, a substantial portion of Maryland, northern and western Virginia, and certain areas of West Virginia.
The harshest conditions are expected during the overnight hours and early morning, with wind chills likely to stay at or below zero throughout Saturday due to a combination of high winds and extremely low temperatures. These frigid conditions present a significant risk for frostbite and hypothermia, especially for those who do not take appropriate precautions. Prolonged exposure to such cold can become life-threatening in just a short time.
Residents are advised to dress warmly in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings to shield exposed skin. It is also recommended that pets remain indoors whenever possible, while outdoor animals should have access to shelter, food, and water that does not freeze.
Additionally, family members, friends, and neighbors—particularly the elderly—should be checked on during this cold spell. Officials emphasize the importance of using space heaters safely and remind the public never to operate generators or grills indoors.
As the weather situation develops, further updates will be provided, especially if the watch evolves into a warning. With proactive measures, residents can better navigate this severe cold weather and keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
