Following the termination of head coach Sherrone Moore “for cause,” the Michigan football program is currently confronting significant roster and reputation challenges, particularly concerning the future of true-freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. Underwood, the top recruit in the class of 2025, made headlines when he committed to Michigan in December 2024, allegedly tied to a lucrative NIL deal valued at around $3 million, one of the largest in college football history.

Moore’s departure stemmed from an internal investigation that the athletic department cited as having found “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship. In response, Michigan has appointed associate head coach Biff Poggi as the interim head coach leading into the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl scheduled for December 31.

CBS Sports HQ analyst Chris Hummer suggested that Moore’s dismissal presents a pivotal opportunity to “reset” the quarterback-staff relationship. Hummer noted there had been indications of Underwood’s dissatisfaction with the offensive strategy. A coaching change could allow Michigan to better align its offensive philosophy with Underwood’s playing style, potentially enhancing both his growth and the team’s overall future.

During the 2025 regular season, Underwood demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities, finishing with 2,229 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and six interceptions, while also adding 323 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. His performance was instrumental in Michigan achieving a 9-3 record (7-2 in the Big Ten), although the season concluded with a loss to Ohio State, overshadowing a five-game winning streak.

Initially, Underwood’s recruitment made a splash when he reversed his commitment from LSU to Michigan in November 2024, a switch widely believed to be influenced by a record-breaking NIL package from Michigan’s primary collective.

Looking ahead, potential replacements for Moore range from established names like Kalen DeBoer of Alabama to innovative offensive coaches such as Kenny Dillingham of Arizona State, both of whom could appeal to Underwood’s aspirations for his collegiate career. The new hire will face the challenge of presenting a winning culture and a compelling developmental program to ensure Underwood remains committed to Michigan amidst reported interest from other schools, including LSU.

This period of transition might ultimately lead to positive developments for both Michigan football and Bryce Underwood, as the program looks to recalibrate and solidify its future with one of college football’s brightest young talents.
