The Miami University women’s basketball team delivered an impressive performance, clinching a 72-60 victory against the University of Massachusetts. The win continues Miami’s perfect start in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play, bringing their record to 3-0 in the league and 11-4 overall. Key contributions came from Amber Tretter and Núria Jurjo, who both scored 17 points, while Tamar Singer showcased her playmaking abilities with a game-high 11 assists.
The contest began with UMass taking an early lead, scoring the first four points. However, Miami quickly responded with a 7-0 run, ignited by a three-pointer from Ilse de Vries. UMass momentarily regained the lead but ended the first quarter with a slim 14-12 advantage. They extended their lead to 18-12 at the start of the second quarter, yet Miami’s offense exploded thereafter.
In a remarkable second quarter, Miami scored 30 points, including eight three-pointers. The RedHawks’ barrage of scoring started with Amber Scalia, who, alongside Jurjo, knocked down several triples to shift momentum decisively in Miami’s favor. By halftime, Miami had established a comfortable lead of 42-27.
Although UMass made efforts to close the gap throughout the second half, Miami maintained control of the game. Tretter’s contributions helped keep a cushion between the teams, and despite UMass cutting the margin to ten points late in the game, Miami sealed their victory with solid defense and timely scoring.
Individually, Tretter recorded her 25th career double-double, boasting 17 points and 10 rebounds, placing her fourth in the program’s history for double-doubles. Jurjo also achieved a career milestone, hitting five three-pointers and matching her career-high of 17 points. Additionally, Tamar Singer reached over 100 assists for the season, marking her fourth game with double-digit assists.
The RedHawks will look to continue their strong performance as they prepare to face Akron on Saturday, January 10, with the game set to tip off at 12 p.m. Miami’s momentum and stellar teamwork reflect a promising outlook as they advance in their season. The ongoing success of their players, particularly in key statistical areas, highlights the growth and potential of the team.
