Manchester United has begun discussions with several former players, including Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, regarding the position of caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. These talks are still in the early stages, with no clear frontrunner identified to step in temporarily after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Amorim was relieved of his duties following a challenging 14-month tenure, leading the club to appoint Fletcher as the interim manager for the time being. Fletcher will oversee the team while the search for a caretaker progresses, with a permanent successor to Amorim expected to be named by summer.

Director of football Jason Wilcox has reached out to Fletcher, Solskjaer, and Carrick about potentially taking over the managerial role, while also considering Ruud van Nistelrooy, another ex-United player, who previously managed to secure three wins and a draw in four matches as caretaker in 2024.

Solskjaer’s previous experience as caretaker after the club parted ways with Jose Mourinho in 2018 led to him being appointed as the full-time manager for three years until 2021. Meanwhile, Carrick has been seeking a new challenge since leaving Middlesbrough last June.

In addition to the former players, current Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and ex-Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, now at Marseille, have emerged as contenders for the permanent role. Glasner, who recently earned an FA Cup victory with Palace, addressed speculation about his future in a press conference, affirming his commitment to Palace.

The decisions being made within Manchester United reflect a broader restructuring period, with hopes that interim leadership can stabilize the team and bring renewed energy as they plan for the upcoming summer transition.
