Kentucky Football is making headlines as it continues to strengthen its roster through the transfer portal. The Wildcats recently secured a significant addition in Oklahoma Sooners running back Jovantae Barnes, who announced his commitment to the program on Tuesday, following his official visit to Kentucky on January 4.

Barnes, who stands at 5-foot-11.5 and weighs 185 pounds, has one year of eligibility remaining and aims to step into the RB1 role under new head coach Will Stein. His decision to join the Wildcats reflects the positive impression Kentucky made during his visit, showing an encouraging direction for the program.

During his time at Oklahoma, Barnes showcased his talent and versatility, amassing 1,469 rushing yards and scoring 13 touchdowns over his collegiate career. His freshman season in 2022 was particularly stellar, with 519 rushing yards and five touchdowns from 116 carries. After a subsequent season where his role fluctuated, Barnes rebounded in 2024, achieving career highs with 577 rushing yards on 122 attempts, along with 17 receptions totaling 123 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, an injury limited him to just four games last season, which has granted him an additional year of eligibility.

The Wildcats faced competition from other programs, notably Arkansas and LSU, but Kentucky’s recent surge in portal activity, including visits from Texas transfer CJ Baxter and several linemen, signals a focused effort to enhance the team’s depth and experience.

As January progresses and more visits to the Joe Craft Football Training Facility unfold, Barnes represents a pivotal addition that could significantly reshape Kentucky’s roster ahead of the 2026 season. With ongoing recruitment efforts, the Wildcats appear poised to build a strong competitive team moving forward.
