He had traveled there in anticipation of the Sugar Bowl game between Georgia and Notre Dame.
Sonny Smart was head coach at Bainbridge High School from 1988 to 1994, during which time his son Kirby was a player. He later coached Rabun County High School from 1995 to 2003. His family was by his side when he passed away, as he was remembered for his dedication both as a coach and a family man. Kirby Smart has previously expressed how much he learned from his father’s coaching style, emphasizing preparation and resilience.
Originally from Columbia, Alabama, Sonny earned his degree from Samford University, where he played as a center on the football team. He later retired to the mountains near Clayton, Georgia, where he ran a golf league for those over 55.
