Lau Province has taken a decisive stand against drug trafficking, emphasizing that individuals involved in the illegal trade “have no place” in the region. This commitment was publicly affirmed during a gathering in Suva last Friday, where provincial leaders expressed their unwavering support for law enforcement efforts in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The leaders outlined the importance of combatting substance abuse to safeguard families and protect future generations.

Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, Tui Lau, Ratu Tevita Lutunauga Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara underscored the well-being of the people as the top priority. He advocated for a zero tolerance policy towards drug suppliers, articulating a collective resolve within the province against narcotics. Ratu Tevita emphasized that the battle against drugs transcends mere enforcement; it is fundamentally about protecting families and securing the community’s future.

Addressing those struggling with substance abuse, he encouraged rehabilitation and self-redemption, reinforcing that drug-related issues are intricately linked to broader social challenges, including violence against women. He warned that communities are bearing significant costs due to these intertwined crises and called for a unified approach to combat them effectively.

Ratu Tevita’s plea extended to other provinces, urging them to unite in the fight against drugs and the associated crimes that endanger community safety. Likewise, Lau Provincial Council chairman Meli Saubulinayau reiterated the need for concrete action. He stated that their commitment to this cause is more than just words; it’s a call to action for community members to join the fight collaboratively.

Saubulinayau emphasized the importance of community cooperation, intelligence sharing, and raising awareness as crucial components in supporting police efforts and preventing youth from being lured into drug use. Through unity and determination, Lau Province aims to address these pressing challenges and work towards a brighter future for all its members.
