Los Angeles is poised to leave a remarkable legacy from the upcoming 2028 Olympics by launching one of the largest volunteer programs in history. With no permanent structures being built for the games, the LA28 organizing committee has taken a proactive approach by opening registration for an extensive volunteer initiative, encouraging Angelenos to engage in their communities well ahead of the Olympic festivities.
The newly unveiled program allows interested individuals to express their desire to participate in local community events, provide assistance during the Games, or both. Collaborative efforts with local organizations and nonprofits are set to kick off volunteer events by the end of 2025, promoting a spirit of volunteerism and civic engagement. Although the Olympics will commence on July 14, 2028, and the Paralympics will follow on August 15, 2028, the application process for volunteering will not open until summer 2026.
LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of giving back, stating, “We are not waiting until 2028 to tap into Los Angeles’ resilience, generosity and grit. This unique initiative channels the spirit of volunteerism long before the opening ceremony, and we have the chance to create a model for future host cities.” The goal is to unite residents across communities and contribute to building a stronger city.
The volunteer program is being piloted through collaborations with initiatives like Shine LA and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, focusing on beautification and community service in anticipation of the Games. While volunteer opportunities during the Olympics will extend outside the Los Angeles region, volunteers will play essential roles at venues across the country, including in Oklahoma City for specific competitions.
LA28 estimates the need for between 50,000 to 70,000 volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the Games, marking this as the largest volunteer effort in Olympic history and a milestone for the Paralympics in Los Angeles. Volunteers will be stationed at various venues and major transportation hubs, offering assistance to athletes, guiding guests, and managing media areas.
Participation in community volunteering before the Games is not a prerequisite for securing a spot in 2028, although early involvement may enhance a candidate’s application. Registered volunteers will receive invitations to sign up for events tailored to their interests and location, ensuring that many Angelenos have the chance to contribute to an unforgettable experience for athletes and visitors alike. This initiative not only promises to foster a sense of community but also sets a precedent for future Olympic host cities, creating a lasting, positive impact on Los Angeles and its residents.
