Patrick Kane’s undisclosed injury is expected to keep him out of the lineup for an extended period, while defenseman Moritz Seider is set to play in Saturday’s road matchup against the Washington Capitals, which kicks off at 12:30 p.m. on the FanDuel Sports Network.

The Detroit Red Wings have had a challenging time in the second match of back-to-back games, holding a concerning 1-5 record in such situations. Following the game in Washington, they will host the Capitals again on Sunday. Coach Todd McLellan confirmed that goalie John Gibson will start in net on Saturday, though he has yet to finalize his decision for the Sunday game.

Seider’s availability was initially uncertain as he did not participate in today’s practice, a noteworthy detail considering he has not missed a game since his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season. Having played 363 consecutive games, his durability and physical play have been commendable. Seider did come out on the ice prior to practice, skating without equipment before exiting the rink.

“Just a maintenance day out there in a sweatshirt skating,” McLellan explained.

Additionally, forward Mason Appleton remains on injured reserve and is not expected to return to the lineup just yet.

Regarding Kane, McLellan noted, “I think he skated before practice today, which is a good sign, but he won’t play tomorrow.” Kane is accompanying the team on a special trip where mothers of the players are invited to watch their sons compete—an event coach McLellan enjoys.

“Sharp practice today,” he stated. “I told the players they should have their moms move in all the time. And I’m not sure if it was always like that with the fathers, but I like having them around.”

Even players who are currently injured, such as Kane, are included on this mother’s trip, underscoring the supportive environment of the team. “We’re taking everybody, which we should,” McLellan added.

The Red Wings hold onto a spirit of camaraderie and resilience as they navigate player injuries and the challenges of back-to-back games, with expectations of improvement on the horizon.
