Officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands celebrated the launch of Southwest Airlines’ inaugural nonstop flight from Orlando to St. Thomas on Thursday at Cyril E. King International Airport. This new direct service is seen as a significant advancement for tourism and the local economy.
Upon arrival, the flight received a traditional water salute, marking the occasion before local leaders, airline representatives, and media gathered to acknowledge this milestone. Jennifer Matarangas-King, commissioner of the U.S. Virgin Islands Tourism Department, highlighted the extensive collaboration that brought Southwest Airlines to the territory, emphasizing the importance of building strong partnerships.
Adam Decaire, Southwest Airlines’ senior vice president of network planning and network operations control, expressed the airline’s commitment to fostering long-term relationships with the Virgin Islands, looking forward to many successful years of service.
Willard John, chair of the Virgin Islands Port Authority governing board, noted that the new service signifies enhanced connectivity, crucial for the territory’s economic vitality. Senate President Milton E. Potter echoed this sentiment, stating that connectivity is essential for economic survival and growth in the region.
Port Authority officials revealed that the successful negotiation for this service stemmed from years of outreach to Southwest Airlines, which were temporarily halted due to hurricanes impacting the territory. However, the commitment to re-engage ultimately led to today’s results.
Executive Director Carlton Dowe stressed the importance of collaborating with airlines that align with the Virgin Islands’ vision for growth, inviting Southwest to consider further expansion opportunities in St. Croix.
Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach welcomed the new flights as a means for people to visit and experience the rich hospitality of the Virgin Islands, urging for a sustained partnership with the airline. Governor Albert Bryan Jr. highlighted the flights’ role in enhancing affordable travel for residents needing access to essential services on the U.S. mainland.
He pointed out that the affordability provided by Southwest is particularly valuable for islanders who must travel for healthcare and family matters. Furthermore, Bryan linked the new service to workforce development, emphasizing the need for professionals across various sectors to support the territory’s growth.
In his remarks, Bryan underscored the strategic importance of connecting the Virgin Islands to major U.S. markets like Orlando, signaling plans for advertising that would elevate awareness and appeal of the islands to potential visitors.
Overall, the introduction of these nonstop flights is anticipated to enhance visitor traffic, bolster tourism, and offer residents more economical travel options to the U.S. mainland. Port Authority and tourism leaders are optimistic that developing additional routes, along with continued investments in ferry services and airport infrastructure, will pave the way for sustained economic growth and connectivity for the territory.
