Agriculture officials are actively implementing a series of initiatives in Kadavu to enhance food production and rehabilitate degraded land. Teams from the Land Resources Planning Division and the Crop Extension Division, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, are collaborating with local communities to advance these projects.
At Richmond Methodist High School and Tiliva District School, efforts are being made to expand the School Garden Programme. This initiative includes establishing plant nurseries and box farming systems, providing students with hands-on agricultural experience while promoting better nutrition and self-sufficiency.
In the Muani area, officials are mapping previously logged forest zones as part of a broader land rehabilitation effort. The collected data will inform plans aimed at restoring soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and improving the long-term productivity of the affected lands.
Additionally, preparations are in progress in Solovola, Ravitaki, to create a dedicated agro-ecology demonstration site. This model farm will highlight sustainable agricultural techniques that harmonize food production with environmental care. It is anticipated that this site will serve as a resource center for local farmers and neighboring communities.
These initiatives reflect the ministry’s commitment to supporting rural development, promoting climate-smart farming practices, and fostering resilient agricultural systems throughout Kadavu. By prioritizing both agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability, these efforts embody a hopeful vision for the region’s future.
