A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison by the Suva High Court for the sexual assault of a woman at a hospital in Kadavu in 2023. The court disclosed that the victim sought medical assistance at the hospital to confirm her pregnancy status following her prior experiences of sexual assault and abduction. Instead of offering the necessary help, the radiographer exploited her vulnerable situation to commit the assault.
The presiding High Court Judge highlighted the gravity of the crime, stating that the man’s actions represented a profound breach of trust, not only towards the victim but also towards the healthcare system that depended on him to fulfill an essential role. The judge pointed out that the defendant’s considerable culpability justified a lengthy sentence.
In deciding the length of the sentence, the judge took into account that the accused had already spent 17 days in custody, which will be deducted from his total prison time. This means he will need to serve an additional eight months and eleven days behind bars, with a non-parole period set at five years and eleven months.
